The Challenge: Amazon brought me in to help build a virtual showroom experience for Oral B iO. The problem was the CAD. It was a mess. Unoptimised, heavy, and not built for real time 3D. Even if you tried to reduce it, the end result would have looked cheap and it would have damaged the premium positioning.
this was not a case of clicking reduce polygons and calling it done. The CAD was built for engineering, not for interactive web, app, or VR. The geometry was heavy, messy, and full of stuff that would not survive a premium close up.
The whole experience needed to feel expensive. If the models looked rough, the showroom would have felt rough, and that would have dragged down the positioning.
Creative Solution: I rebuilt the 3D models properly. Clean topology with no errors, correct scale, and UVs that actually behave. The original CAD was an unusable 3D mesh with topology errors that made it difficult to UV and unreliable for real time use.
This was not a quick decimation job. It was proper CAD to production 3D work, optimised for real time rendering and interactive use across web, app, VR, AR, and motion design. It also meant the assets were suitable for an interactive product demo, a 3D product configurator, and web based 3D showroom experiences.
The final delivery was glTF, which is ideal for online 3D and web based 3D showrooms. Lightweight, fast, and consistent. Web ready 3D models that load quickly, run smoothly, and hold up to premium close ups. The assets were built to plug into web, app, VR, and AR pipelines without falling apart, while still supporting premium lighting and product visualisation.
Impact and Results: The showroom achieved a 22% add to basket rate. One third of users stayed over 60 seconds, and half of the rest stayed over 30 seconds. Most importantly, the final experience looked and felt premium, which protected the positioning and made the product range easier to understand.
Thanks: Thanks to Amazon and Oral B. Special thanks to Neil Coxhill and Jodie Lee Durkin.
